In the case of "competitive" I would think FastSync would suffice. You'd get the benefits of having the game loop running full tilt while eliminating tearing. The max fps setting is good if you don't want more than x amount of fps, but if you want to get rid of tearing you need the dynamic refresh rate of a sync monitor.
